Short accounts of eighteen men and women who live or have lived in the northern areas of Manitoba—a freighter, a York boatman, a Mountie, a Bayline conductor, a trapper, a birch bark artist, a miner, a prospector, a trapper, and several more.

Each has come to terms with the northern style of life and finds it enjoyable and rewarding. Several were born into that society, while many live in the area by choice. Formerly published as special articles for the Winnipeg Free Press, this collection introduces a colourful group of rugged individuals who peopled the frontier in Manitoba.

More factual than adventure stories, these give a picture of real life in a sparsely settled region of the country.
