Harper. Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January Canada: Windows on the World is the latest in the Canadiana Scrapbook series. It examines a number of significant issues that have shaped Canada's international role both in the past and in the immediate future. Like the earlier titles in the series, the format makes difficult concepts like Apartheid easier to understand through the use of multiple photos, short captions, charts, maps, and graphs. This book, because of its flexible format, lends itself to multiple learning approaches. For junior students or those with reading problems, the many pictures and small chunks of information provide quick, ready access. For more senior students or browsing adults, the book provides a preview of topics or events that can be investigated in greater depth in other sources. A weakness with this book is the use of advanced vocabulary to introduce rather complex concepts, for example, government subsidies. The assumption made is that the reader understands such vocabulary and concepts. Notwithstanding, Canada: Windows on the World is recommended for Canadian studies at the grade 10 level.
