Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January This abridged version of the classic Anne of Green Gables is probably a book that will be viewed with mixed reactions by librarians. There will be those who will have nothing to do with an abridged version of a classic, and then there are those who will find this a welcome addition to the limited number of quality books available to the reluctant reader. The original story of Anne appeals mainly to the adolescent reader. In this adaptation, the story line adheres to the original as far as it goes. Much had to be omitted when reducing 329 pages to 45. The illustrations make up for some of the loss. They are full-page ink drawings skilfully executed of infinite detail. They take up a third of the book and are a boon to the reluctant reader. The story and illustrations in A Child's Anne will appeal to the young teenager. However, it is seriously questionable whether the title is suitable for this age level. In fact, it may prove to be a real stumbling block to the reluctant adolescent. It is very important for producers of young people's literature to co-ordinate title, contents, and illustrations, and it is preferable to leave the classics in their original form. I would like to encourage Kessler and Trainor to team up again and to base their next book on an original composition. Sally Davis, St. John's, NL.
