Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January E.J. Pratt, one of Canada's most respected poets, was "a master of direct, swift narrative poetry." He died in 1964, but his work is still read and studied by high school students as well as students in post-secondary institutions. The aim of this work is:          to present a critical annotated text of the collected          works of E.J. Pratt-com-plete poetry, selected prose          and correspondence-fully collated and with a textual          apparatus that traces the transmission of the text          and lists variant readings. The editor, Susan Gingell, has performed her task well, and the book, although scholarly, is filled with fascinating radio interviews and commentaries of a general and specific nature. The reader begins to know Pratt as a man of scholar ship, humour, and humanity. Senior students will find that E.J. Pratt provides excellent insight into his own work. E.J.
