Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January Did you know that a giant squid has eyes the size of dinner plates or that a blue whale's heart is as big as a sub-compact car? You can read about these and other fascinating facts in four delightful pocket-sized books produced by the editors of OWL Magazine. The first, second, and fourth titles named above are based on factual information about birds, animals, insects, etc. The material in Jokes and Riddles is related to the same subject matter and includes some real things that are funny. The jokes and riddles were submitted by readers of OWL Magazine. Although quite entertaining, this book is the weakest of the four. The two Amazing But True books are collections of unusual facts about wildlife, weather, space, etc. In the introduction, the editors explain that the books are not intended to be read from cover to cover but are to be used at odd moments when the reader has a little extra time. The books are indexed so that information on specific topics can be located easily. One of the strengths is that they describe things in terms that youngsters can understand, e.g. "The bald eagle has been known to build a nest as deep as a swimming pool and as wide as three bathtubs." OWL's Puzzles and Puzzlers contains many kinds of puzzles, such as word searches, mixed-up photos, quizzes, etc. All are related to wildlife and many were suggested by readers of OWL. Children who try the puzzles will have fun while learning many interesting things. The answers are given at the back of the book, although an unfortunate typesetting error on page 91 has resulted in a few solutions being omitted. Most youngsters aged 7 to 11 will enjoy and benefit from reading these books. Even reluctant readers will probably find themselves reading eagerly. Highly recommended! Enid Dorward, Winnipeg, MB.
