BEARS FOR BREAKFAST

Volume 12 Number 2
A collection of six well-written stories about the Thiessens, a Canadian Mennonite family with four children ages two to ten. Each story relates an incident surrounding one of the three older children. One is concerned with dealing with other children who wanted to fight. Another is about five-year-old Michael's realizing that he must forgive someone who had fooled him several times and who then needed his help. The incident requiring the greatest courage involved Anna, the seven-year-old girl, who boldly chased a family of bears away from her family's camp breakfast. The Thiessen children are believable characters, with very real fears, joys, and even fits of pouting. A few of the stories have some religious content, but they are not moralistic. The book is suitable for school and church libraries, especially (but not exclusively) in areas with a Mennonite population. Enid Dorward, Winnipeg, MB. |
