Volume 12 Number 2 1984 March David Bowie comes alive in this vivid portrayal. The reader is in the front row of the audience as this 40ish blond rock star dramatically performs. He has been described as "elegant, urbane, and reeking of sophistication." Bowie has stated that he wants to be a Frank Sinatra figure. The reader follows his career from his birth in 1947 in Brixton to his early, not entirely successful days in jazz. We follow the ups and downs in his varied career. The glossy photos are of exceptional quality. Philip Kamin is a graduate from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. His work appears in magazines, songbooks, albums internationally. Over one hundred photos vary from full page to several per page. Black-and-white as well as dramatic coloured prints are represented. As a picture book the collection can well stand alone. The text, however, adds much to the brilliant collection of photos. Author Peter Goddard is the rock and jazz critic for the Toronto Star. Goddard has an MA in music and a degree in solo piano performance. He scores well as a writer. The text is exciting and yet easy to read. David Bowie fans of all ages will enjoy this book.
