Volume 12 Number 2 1984 March Blaine Hatt is a teacher at Fredericton High School. He has developed and taught for several years a course in Atlantic Provinces literature with his grade 12 English students. Finding no good collection of contemporary Atlantic writers available, he decided to develop one himself. Easterly is the result. It is a collection of selected poems, short stories, articles, and essays written by sixty different writers from this region. Each contributor is represented by no more than three or four titles depending on the length of the work and of course on its value; Fred Cogswell and Alden Nowlan have five entries each. Arrangement in the collection is alphabetical so the teacher has the option or responsibility to choose the order in which they are to be taught. There is a thematic index that allows the teacher to follow that approach, but for the researcher the only access is through the table of contents. There is no title index. Hatt includes short, factual biographies of the authors at the back. A more useful tool might have been an introductory biographical and critical essay at the beginning of each author's section. His choice of authors to include is comprehensive ranging from the established, Hugh MacLennan, Ernest Buckler, and E.J. Pratt, to the young warriors, Allan Cooper, David Adams Richards, Des Walsh, and Jim Hornby. Minorities are represented, Rita Joe, for one, as well as outsiders who have become Atlantic writers. All of the Atlantic Provinces are represented. There is nothing in French, and no Acadian writers have been translated. Most of the entries are poetry. At present in New Brunswick there is another collection of Maritime writing that is used in grade 10, The Maritime Experience, edited by Michael O. Nowlan (Macmillan, 1975). It is a more retrospective collection and seems to contain less poetry than Easterly, which will be a welcome addition and will, one hopes, be used in a Maritime studies program to be introduced to the curriculum. It can serve as an introduction to writing in the region but if study of any one of these writers in depth is being considered, it certainly is not adequate. Recommended. Catherine Cox, Moncton H.
