As author and illustrator, Tim O'Halloran brings a refreshing point of view to a book about numbers. The first part of the book is devoted to counting to twenty. The delightful pictures tell their own story, while a humorous, loosely rhyming poem explains the pictures as the reader counts, e.g., "One silly goat Who chews tin cans,/Two selfish robins and one rubber band. Counting to twenty is followed by a mouse orchestra to review one to ten.

I especially like the discussion and language development in the second half of the book. The author uses humorous pictures of people and animals to present mathematical problems. He skilfully gives many examples of one-to-one correspondence and ordinal numbers. Addition and subtraction facts up to ten are illustrated by picture stories, with readers actively participating to complete the number sentences. They also participate in answering questions about geometry and telling time. Know Your Numbers even expands to include comparatives, opposites, and seasons!

This large, colourful book would be enjoyed by people of all ages, though it would likely appeal the most to children from Kindergarten to grade 3. It is a well-bound hardcover, reasonably priced, and I would recommend it for school and public libraries.
