THE NORTHERN IMAGINATION: A STUDY OF NORTHERN CANADIAN LITERATURE
Allison Mitcham.
Moonbeam (ON), Penumbra Press, c1983.
Volume 12 Number 2
This slim volume of literary criticism restates the importance of the Canadian North as a theme for French and English writers. Within well-defined limits, the fiction of Yves Theriault, Gabrielle Roy, Anne Hebert, Atwood, Grove, Langevin, and Horwood, among others, is described as inspired by Thoreau's view of the wilderness as a saving force. The idea of survival in the face of the dangers of the harsh environment is not new, but the inclusion of both French and English Canadian authors gives a broader perspective on our literature. The black-and-white drawings of the North by Carl Schaefer punctuate the brief text aptly, but the proof-reading is slipshod. Philip K. Harber, Toronto Board of Education, Toronto, ON. |
