ONTARIO
J. A. Kraulis.
North Vancouver, Whitecap Books, c1982.
Volume 12 Number 3
The highlight of this photographic study of Ontario is the landscapes. Kraulis has captured the beauty of the different seasons and the varieties of the Ontario countryside. He prefaces his photographs with a brief essay, on the variety of the province that reads well. He describes some of the historic areas of Ontario as well as the figures in history. It is with people that we feel there is a lack of focus. Surely the variety of the landscape combines with the variety of people who live in this province and not enough is seen of them. The book falls into no category of photographic essay. As there are only seventy-one photographs, it is difficult to see it as complete. Perhaps Kraulis should have limited his vision to the land rather than attempt to give a feel for the architecture of the cities and a profile of the people. Magnificent, however, are the sunsets and the most interesting photograph is a clearly well-designed view of sailboats at the National Yacht Club in Toronto. An interesting addition to a library collection of the provinces of Canada. Carrie Gardner, Seneca College, North York, ON. |
