THE SHAPE OF RAGE: THE FILMS OF DAVID CRONENBERG
Edited by Piers Handling.
Toronto, General Publishing, c1983.
Volume 12 Number 3
Canada's premier filmmaker is explored in a series of five scholarly essays by seven noted film critics. David Cronenberg has quickly established himself as a prime director in the genre of horror and science fiction films. The public's impression of blood and guts has crowned him the "Baron of Blood." The Shape of Rage (the title of a book in his film, The Brood) examines Cronenberg's cinematic vision through his most commercially successful offerings such as The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, and his current hit The Dead Zone. The critics own interpretations are counterbalanced by a telling interview of some length with Cronenberg, Piers Handling, and William Beard. Included are a detailed filmography, a general bibliography, and specific film-oriented bibliographies. The work is illustrated with stills from his works. This would constitute an essential addition for collections to students of film in high school, community college, university as well as the general interest reader. Roger J. Smith, Faculty of Education, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON. |
