CAT'S CRADLE, OWL'S EYES: A BOOK OF STRING GAMES
Camilla Gryski. Illustrated by Tom Sankey.
Volume 12 Number 4
String games, like folk tales, are part of the culture of many countries. With easy-to-follow directions and clear, detailed diagrams, Camilla Gryski, a children's librarian "who always carries string in her pocket", brings to children the delights of Cat's Cradle, Owl's Eyes, and nineteen other string games. Gryski first introduces to her young readers the terminology, or "special language", used in the making of string figures, and then gives the basic positions and loops needed to create any of the patterns. With each string pattern presented, she gives the country or countries of origin and relates some interesting detail of the folklore behind the figure. Cat's Cradle, Owl's Eyes can be used for several purposes: curricular, cultural, leisure. A good buy.Margaret Marsh, Waterloo County Board of Education, Kitchener, ON. |
