HEART OF GOLD: 30 YEARS OF CANADIAN POP MUSIC
Martin Melhuish.
Toronto, CBC Enterprises, c1983.
Volume 12 Number 5
Melhuish, a concert promoter and producer of radio and television rock shows and journalist for Maclean’s and Rolling Stone, has produced a chronicled account of the growth of the Canadian popular music industry from its beginnings in the 1950s to the present time. The work, whose title is based on a three hour-tribute to Canadian popular music that was done in 1982 by CBC, includes artists who have captured the essence of Canadian popular music in the national and international scenes. Beginning with the Four Lads in the early 50s and continuing through the transition from balladeers to rhythm and blues to the Canadian folk music contributions of the 1960s-1970s and including the music of the 1980s, the text provides a chronological account that includes anecdotes and dates. Information is organized into twenty-three chapters including separate chapters on Anne Murray, Paul Anka, and Gordon Lightfoot. There is one chapter devoted to popular music in Quebec. Also included are two hundred photographs (both black and white and colour) and an index of names. There is no bibliography. An attractive browsing item that will be popular in public and school library collections. Bessie Condos Egan, Winnipeg P. L., Winnipeg, MB. |
