FIRST STEPS TO MATHEMATICS: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS TO BEGINNING MATHEMATICS ACTIVITIES
Calgary, Braun and Braun Educational Enterprises, c1984.
Volume 12 Number 6
First Steps to Mathematics helps bridge the gap between home and school. The fulfilled intent of this guide is to assist parents and teachers in the presentation of basic mathematical concepts to young children. The approach to the subject is exploratory, and the suggested activities are organized around typical daily events in the lives of pre-school aged children, for it is from these experiences that mathematical concepts emerge. Each of the chapters contains ideas suitable for easy implementation both at home and in the classroom. The suggested activities enrich everything from getting dressed to going for a holiday. Even a walk around the block takes on greater significance when a child's attention is being focused upon mathematical patterns such as house numbers and bus route numbers. Throughout the guide, considerable emphasis is placed upon the development of vocabulary related to number, space, and measurement. The black-and-white illustrations on every page are supportive of the text, as are the appendices, which include some material for duplicating (e.g., letters to parents, recipes). Teachers should appreciate the clear cross-referencing of curriculum objectives with activities. First Steps to Mathematics would be particularly suitable as a teacher resource to share with parents of young children. Joan Young, Willway E.S., Victoria, BC. |
