RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN NATIVE EDUCATION
Toronto, Canadian Education Association, c1984.
Volume 12 Number 6
Native education is undergoing rapid changes throughout Canada. This booklet gives an overview of progress and policies across the country. The various provincial departments of education each have a brief summary of their programs written by a senior member of their respective departments. The purpose as stated in the introduction is to "provide an overview of native education, .. .and to make educators aware of what is happening in other schools across the country." The book is not political in nature and does not deal with contentious issues such as funding, which capture so much attention and media coverage. The Department of Indian Affairs itself has eleven pages in which it explains the role of the department in native education. Last year the CEA sent out questionnaires to school boards across the country. School programs, challenges, locally-developed curriculum materials, native involvement in education, and native staffing were issues addressed by the questionnaires. Responses by the school boards are listed under those topics. Finally, the report looks at the issue of local control and discusses some of the benefits and problems, that have occurred. Certainly the booklet's conclusion, that "A positive presentation of native culture, traditions and history helps students gain pride and self-confidence in using their abilities towards success," cannot be disputed. Real success is occurring: between 1960 and 1970, only 233 Indians graduated from university; since 1978, the average has been 250 each year. A useful booklet for administrators, school boards with native students, and for public libraries. David Chadwick, Norway House H. S., Norway House, MB. |
