SING A RAINBOW: SONGS FOR CHILDREN
Mahri Sherlock.
JOF Production, 1984.
Volume 12 Number 6
Here is a tape that sings. Songs written and sung by Mahri Sherlock celebrate through imagery, language and melody the beauty of nature. On Side 1 are songs with seasonal themes from the soothing "Blue Heron," the rolling rhythm of "Stormy Sea," to the rocking motion of "Listen to the Raindrops." Sherlock's voice (similar to Joan Baez's) carries well above rich guitar accompaniment. Appropriately at times a violin, recorder, or keyboard is added for mood. In the lilting, happy song, "A Rainbow of Colours" an appealingly natural child's voice joins in expressing happiness over colours she wears that are related to nature's colours. This winning song invites participation from listeners. Side 2's songs continue the nature theme as we hear about insects, birds, flowers, and vegetables in "The Garden Song," "The Caterpillar," and "Apples." Many of these tunes lend themselves to both movement and reverie. The rock beat of "Simon and Gethen" invites dancing as we "check out the day" with them. The closing lullaby, "The Moon Is an Apple," with its imagery of the silvery moon hanging in the sky like an apple, is a fitting, gentle end to this rainbow of songs that will open children's eyes and ears to their world.
