Volume 13 Number 1 1985 January Emily, aged five, did not want to go to kindergarten. She tried hard to like school, but when she spoke, her sentences were interspersed with "Um." When Emily described the picture she had painted, Priscilla counted the number of times she said "um." Emily became very unhappy at school, but at Christmas she went with her mother to an exercise class where everyone chanted UMMMMMMMM. . . . When Emily returned to school, she introduced the chant to the class and was praised for her efforts. This story does not really come across. The teacher does not try to help Emily or discuss her problems with the other children. The solution of Emily chanting and being accepted is rather improbable. Emily's distress does come across. This might be an excellent book to stimulate discussion amongst childworkers and children. This reviewer does not think that the story is really successful as a story.
