AMAZING TRIVIA FROM THE WORLD OF FOOTBALL. Fischler, Stan. Markham (Ont.), Penguin Books, c1984. 175pp, paper, $3.95, ISBN 0-14-007388-4. CIP
Volume 13 Number 1
Fischler has failed to observe the basic rule for trivia success: the trivia must not be trivial. Isolated, unconnected facts are only of interest if the reader can relate either the question or the answer to some relevant facet of his own experience. The majority of questions in this hastily assembled collection fail utterly to follow the basic rule or to interest the reader. The questions jump from one football league to another, from Canada to the United States, from historic highlights to ludicrous footnotes, with no logical pattern. If one is asked, "What team once rushed for minus 36 yards in one game?" the answer that immediately comes to mind and that indeed will sum up most readers' reaction to the Fischlers' total effort, is "Who cares?"
