Volume 13 Number 1
Gwendolyn MacEwen has written in several genres-short stories, longer fiction, drama, and children's fiction. In 1970, she won the Governor General's Award for poetry. The Honey Drum is a collection of seven, simply written folk tales, five of them freely translated from traditional Arab tales. Although the other two, "The Black Goat" and "The Ghoul," are the author's original stories, they are written in the same spirit and style as the others and their insertion in the middle of the volume does not interrupt the continuity. The type is large and clear, and black and-white drawings are adequate for the individual reader, but too small to be used in a read-aloud situation. Recommended for readers of all ages who enjoy fairy tales and folklore.
