Selected Toronto Star columns from February 1968 to October 1981 reflect Trudeau's career as interpreted by Lautens. A Duncan Macpherson cartoon accompanies each of nine groups of articles, arranged chronologically. Lautens won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour in 1981 and 1984; Macpherson has previously published collections of his cartoons from the Toronto Star. The combination of their talents in this book produces a witty, and at times incisive, retrospective of Canadian politics in the Trudeau era. Lautens reveals a warm appreciation of both the politicians who are his ostensible targets and Canadian attitudes toward the political process. In satire more gentle than biting, he mirrors each of us as well as our leaders.
