Volume 13 Number 1
1985 January

This volume is one of a series of twelve produced by Statistics Canada for each of Canada's major urban regions (known as census metropolitan areas). Data on thirty-three statistical categories such as population, housing and income are presented using computer graphics techniques to produce a two-page spread on each item. The raw data are converted into black-and-white half-tone or dot density maps. Simple or compound bar graphs either compare the city with the province and nation or show the percentage distribution of the data.

General audiences will find this approach to publishing census data far more instructive than merely reading through the census tracts, the typical way by which census data was made available up to the 1970s. Business or educational users of census materials on urban demographic data will also find these atlases handy references. The spiral bound format combined with the black-and-white printing invites photocopying of individual maps for a seminar group. The only difficulty with some of the maps is the poor choice of half-tone symbols that make it hard to distinguish some categories of data.

Interested readers should note that this atlas series is just one of a host of new special-interest studies that Statistics Canada has been producing in recent years: their Directory of Microdata and Special Tabulations is a new offering of this type. Librarians would be well advised to get on the Statistics Canada mailing list, as these publications appear at irregular intervals.
