This rather simplistic story of a young, clean-cut Canadian boxer from the northern reaches of Alberta may well catch the interest of an uncritical teen-aged reader. Although the cynic may question the historic or literary validity of a biography of a twenty-three-year-old who is just on the verge of starting his professional career, the infectious enthusiasm of the author, and indeed of the dedicated deWit family, soon pushes logical reactions to the background. The reader is swept along in this straightforward story of a middle-class over-achiever who, with the aid of wise managers and the essential financial support, overcomes the roadblocks thrown up by the bureaucracy of Canadian amateur boxing and brings home a hard-won silver medal from the Olympics. Willie emerges as a talented but impulsive athlete whose lack of maturity cost him his goal of Olympic gold. One comes away from this inspirational account with the distinct feeling that the remaining chapters in this success story still remain to be written. Recommended.
