Grades 4 and up Reviewed by William Benson Volume 13 Number 2 1985 March Kathlene Willing and Suzanne Girard have produced another good book that will find many uses in elementary schools. Their second book, The Junior Computer Dictionary, is designed to complement their first book and provide a continuous computer dictionary from grades 1 to 3 and grades 4 to 7. The Junior Computer Dictionary is designed with clear, uncluttered pages, simply but effectively illustrated. Sample programs and illustrations are given to help make most definitions easily understood. All words are laid out in alphabetical order, making them easy to find. In addition, at the back of the book, there is a section labelled "Words at a Glance," which lists all the words used in the book and gives a capsule version of their definition. While Willing and Girard have produced a good book, there are a few minor shortcomings. Being a computer user and a teacher, I disagree with the wording of some of the definitions. They are not major flaws so much as not enough information being given for certain definitions, and they can easily be added to by the teacher using the book with his or her students. The definitions for graphics and error messages are prime examples of this. The other flaw that annoyed me was what they had left out entirely. In one of their illustrations, they show a display which they explain was created by a dot matrix printer. But dot matrix printer is not explained anywhere in the book. These minor flaws do not detract from the book but may give a teacher or parent not comfortable with computer technology a few bad moments. All in all a good book that will be an asset to all school libraries and most teachers and parents. Well worth purchasing. William Benson, Alexander Park P.S., Golden, B.C.
