CIP Grades 11 and up Reviewed by Pauline Henaut Volume 13 Number 2 1985 March The author, who earned a doctorate in history from Stanford University, moved to New Brunswick from the United States in 1977 and is now a Canadian citizen. His fascination with Saint John led him to write this book, and he is working on two other books about the city. Dr. Schuyler became Director of the International Education Centre, at Saint Mary's University, in 1983. Dr. Schuyler's purpose is not to present a complete history of Saint John. Rather, as he says, "the book looks at five moments in the life of Saint John and weaves an historical account around each of them." The accounts deal with the conflict between Charles La Tour and Sieur d'Aulnay, two powerful men of the French period; Saint John's first election in 1785: a battle between Irish Catholics and Protestant Orangemen in 1849; a longshoreman's strike in 1875; and changes that occurred in the city during the era of World War I. The book deals primarily with the effect of these incidents on the lives of the ordinary people. The author indicates that very little has been written about Saint John, and that much more research is necessary before a complete picture of the city's development can be provided. This book is intended for the general reader, but those who wish further information will find the notes and bibliography for each chapter useful. The volume is a physically appealing, sturdy paperback, with an attractive cover, numerous black-and-white photographs and illustrations, easily readable typeface, and effective layout. There is no index. Saint John: Scenes from a Popular History will be a welcome addition to the Canadian history sections of public libraries and is recommended for high school libraries, particularly in schools that teach Canadian studies at the senior level.
