Grades 1 and up / Ages 6 and up Reviewed by Dale Simmons. Volume 13 Number 3 1985 May Miyuki Tanobe, author and illustrator of Québec, Je T'aime / l Love You, was born in Kamakura, Japan. After studying art in her native country, Tanobe spent three years in Paris. It was in Greece, however, that she first included people in her painting. Following further travel, Tanobe reached Montréal in 1971. The streets of Montréal and other Québec areas have provided colourful and captivating compositions for this artist, who has used scenes of daily life to chronicle working class Québec. As well, traditions unique to his province, such as Québec Carnival and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day are depicted. The book is composed of a series of vignettes whose common theme is Québec culture. Children will love to examine the richly detailed illustrations. However, it may be that this is a book that children will prefer to have read to them. Fortunately, with its wide-audience appeal, adults will also enjoy it. People familiar with Montréal should especially appreciate this book as the easily recognizable scenes of Montréal greet them in full colour illustrations.
