Published in advance of the Grange Commission Report, Death Shift chronicles the events at Sick Children's Hospital from the spring of 1980, when the first unexplained infant death occurred, until the conclusion of the Grange Commission hearings in the fall of 1984. The author, a reporter for the CBC, had followed the story "since it began." In addition to the events at "Sick Kids," Bissland also describes several incidences of mysterious deaths at hospitals in the United States, along with subsequent police investigations and convictions. The book offers no new insights. It does, however, bring together in one volume what is known about the mysterious baby deaths. Moreover, it analyzes the role played by the media in the Grange Commission hearings. Since this case is not yet closed, Death Shift, the first book to be written about the "Sick Kids" murders, is unlikely to be the last. However, the interest generated by this case probably justifies its purchase.
