Elliott Volume 13 Number 3 1985 May Based on eight years of research, Thomson presents the reader with an extraordinarily interesting and precise account of the maturing of Jean Lesage and of the Quiet Revolution in Quebec, which he so adroitly encouraged. From the very first chapter, the reader is aware of Thomson's personal touch. This no doubt flows from the many personal interviews he had with the Lesage family. One is aware of the sparkle and buoyancy that could only have come from persons having had first-hand experience of the events themselves. Although Jean Lesage is the main focus of this work, he is by no means the only personage Thomson has gone to great pains to analyze. In fact, many others, including the Honourable Rene Levesque are discussed in their early roles in governmental affairs. Thomson gives an honest appraisal of the politicians and the events significant during the ten years between 1960 and 1970. At the present time he is on leave in Paris, at the invitation of the French government, studying relations between Canada and France. References to all of the twenty chapters are provided in a special section. A brief appendix lists the composition of the government from 1960 to 1966. The reader will find the detailed index useful in research work. With wide margins and an extraordinarily clear type, reading the work is a pleasure.
