Molly is a charmer. She is the large beautiful, humorous and affectionate dog we all yearned for in our youth. Indeed, her only problems are caused by humans who lead her in to desperate situations that end up reflecting badly on Molly. Charlie, the narrator, lives in British Columbia on the banks of the great Fraser river, and the adventures and mishaps of Charlie and his friends make entertaining reading. Charles Perkins writes sympathetically and interestingly about the people and pets of childhood in a small town. Molly learns to play outfield in baseball (Charlie pinch-hits and runs for her), specializes in rescuing drowning children, sings with timberwolves, toboggans and steals fully-dressed hams just like every other Great Saint Bernard dog. The adults are portrayed fairly and Charlie and his friends grow to maturity via believable episodes of devilment and self-sacrifice. Molly is benign and doggedly loyal to the end. Unlike most animal stories this one has a positive, happy ending. Molly, who has had to be given away, triumphs again, proving she really is a dog who will not quit.
