Ito's account of Japanese Canadians' efforts to enlist in Canadian forces during two world wars illustrates and dramatizes the Nisei struggle to attain full citizenship rights. Strong anti-Japanese feelings, which persisted in British Columbia, and the very political nature of the related questions of Japanese Canadian enlistment and franchise form the major themes.

In 1942, Ito was moved from British Columbia to Alberta. He subsequently trained in the Canadian Army Japanese Language School and served in India and southeast Asia. His study was originally requested by the S-20 and Nisei Veterans' Association; publication was assisted by Multiculturalism Canada.

Treatment is roughly chronological, with historical narrative interspersing personal accounts from interviews and letters. The ninety-six photographs are placed with the relevant text. Read continuously, Ito's account is a moving story of the impact of politics and prejudice on a group and on individuals. Organization, into four unbroken chapters without sub-headings or variation in type between narrative and quoted material, makes it difficult to locate specific events or dates. There is an index of proper names and endnotes as well as a list of sources. The latter includes interviews, letters, periodicals, secondary sources, and files from National Archives and the department of national defence. Appendices list Japanese Canadian participants in the two wars.
