Volume 13 Number 3 1985 May Jordy Threebears, the main character in this tightly-written young adult novel, has a lot of help, but he still must struggle to have things work out right for him by the conclusion of the story. The outcome is a lesson in co-operation among a group of unrelated people who share a common interest in success. The story contains many Canadian pre-requisites: native peoples, a character with a handicap, and a prairie setting. Other reliable elements include a horse, some gruff but compassionate adults, and an orphan searching for his identity in a hostile world. These are combined in a new way by the author who keeps the action moving rapidly enough to provide a measure of uncertainty and excitement throughout. The reading level is appropriate for the moderately reluctant student in a general class, and the content, with its concentration on coping with social problems, makes the novel appealing to readers of many backgrounds.
