This volume of the Canadiana Scrapbook series deals with global exploration and discovery. The early chapters provide information on such well-known explorers as Marco Polo and Magellan. Then follow three chapters on sailing and life at sea. The remainder of the book is devoted to North American exploration from the Vikings on. Cartier, Champlain, Hearne, Mackenzie, Cook, Vancouver, Hudson and Franklin each get a chapter.

These chapters are of two pages each, with illustrations (photographs, etchings, sketches, and maps), excerpts from primary sources, lists or time-lines and very brief textual matter.

This series is aimed at elementary and junior high school students. Excellent browsing items, these also serve as introductory material for teachers to use to whet the student's interest. They may also serve for reference.

It should be noted that the format, (oversize, stapled paperback) will have a short shelf life. The extensive bibliography on the last page is in very small print. There is no index but the detailed table of contents makes the items readily accessible. Recommended for classroom use and for consideration by libraries serving young people.
