This is an excellent collection of stories written by members of the Crime Writers of Canada. According to the foreword by Tony Aspler, it is intended to be "a sampler ... of the literary range and imagination of our members," and as such it succeeds admirably.

All the stories exhibit the great delight the authors take in creating their characters and plots, and many of the stories have twist endings that cause the reader to smile knowingly. Indeed, many of the stories would be equally well at home in collections of black humour or science fiction. In Margaret Miller's "McGowney's Miracle." the undertaker always tries to revive his corpses, and one day he is successful. Unfortunately, he has not anticipated the problems he will create, especially as his miracle is not appreciated by the recipient. In Tim Wynne-Jones's "St. Anthony's Man," a mild-mannered violin teacher plots her mother's murder for six years, only to gel involved on the night of the murder with an eccentric panhandler who has decided on a "double your money back scheme" for his next donor.

This collection is wholeheartedly recommended for the newcomer to crime writing or the seasoned reader, as it has something to offer to everyone.
