Up Here is a new magazine published in Yellowknife. Based on the premier issue of December/January 1985, I predict this impressive periodical will gradually become widely known in secondary schools across the country. The first issue features articles on the Pope and the Dene, life at Canada's most northerly mine on Little Cornwallis Island, photographs of a traditional fall caribou hunt, the play, Hornby, reminiscences of flying in bad weather, and visiting a ghost town, as well as short pieces on life in the North. The magazine is in full colour with numerous photographs and illustrations. The editors have made a deliberate and wise decision to portray the North using northern artists, writers, and photographers. The magazine, while in a competitive market with other fine periodicals such as Equinox, National Geographic, and Canadian Geographic, deserves to be considered for inclusion in Canadian schools because of its unique perspective and commitment to the North.
