In this his second volume on the life of Clifford Sifton, D.J. Hall, a professor of history at the University of Alberta, chronicles the political and personal intrigues of his subject in the twentieth century. This basically unbiased "political biography" is clearly the result of extensive research based upon both primary and secondary sources. There are, it must be noted, some necessary gaps in the information. For example, the author, much like the Opposition of the day, was unable to pinpoint all the sources of Sifton's wealth. However, this is a scholarly work complete with an extensive bibliography and many footnotes. The index and table of contents allow for easy access to the wealth of material on Sifton and his fellow politicians. The print is easy to read, and the black-and-white illustrations and pictures give life to the characters in this most interesting fresco of early twentieth century Canada. This text should be of interest to Canadian historians, political scientists, and those members of the general public interested in the country's beginnings.
