Parents for Peace, a Toronto-based group, thinks so and the pen pal idea is just one of many activities detailed in Facing the Nuclear Age: Parents and Children Together. Activities range from playing cooperative games to folding paper cranes and, in each case, explicit instructions are given. In addition to the peace-promoting strategies, which are organized according to appropriate age level, this handy resource book lists the titles and locations of films, videocassettes, books, and articles that are relevant to bringing up children under the threat of nuclear war. Parents for Peace is a group interested in educating other parents about the nuclear arms issue. Through their volunteer committees, they help parents educate and support each other, research and monitor curriculum initiatives in schools, and sponsor events and meetings to encourage a broadly based parent response. Research indicates that children become aware of the arms race by the time they enter school and that they are afraid they may not have a future. But there are constructive and positive steps that adults can take to respond to children's anxieties. I think this resource book is a must in every school and public library. Librarians can be key figures in promoting the many activities it offers as well as stocking the children's books it recommends. Adults may be too old to find pen pals in the Soviet Union, but there are other peacekeeping and peace-promoting roles to fill, particularly for those adults who work with children.
