THE HUG. Simpson, Lesley. Toronto, Annick Press c1985. unpaged, paper, $.99, ISBN 0-920303-23-4. (Annikins)
Volume 13 Number 5
The Hug is a charming story about a hug that wants to be something else, such as a red lillipop, a bicycle tire, a doughnut, or a ring buoy. It discovers that the real fun is in giving another hug a hug. Then the hug shares its happy hugs with the lollipop, bicycle tire, doughnut, and buoy. The hug finds that it loves to hug. This small (8.5 cm square) book would appeal to a child. The story's meaning is accented by colour in some of the pictures and print. The book's one drawback is that it is held together with one staple and would not withstand frequent handling. However, perhaps it is adequate for the price. This pleasant story could be shared with preschoolers and primary children. Just remember to share it "with a hug."
