Children have the right to say no, when something like the wrong kind of touching makes them feel uncomfortable. This is the message being offered to preschoolers and primary grade children in this first of a projected series of books dealing with the sensitive issue of sexual abuse of children. The authors are both teachers who have worked extensively in the area of sexual abuse. On the basis of that experience, they have managed to produce a book that treats assertiveness in a positive manner. Through a direct and simple dialogue between two young friends, Sam and Samantha, a comfortable atmosphere is created and several other concepts dealing with personal safety and ways to prevent sexual abuse are also introduced. Plain black-and-white drawings are stark yet expressive and the bold type easily compliments the no-nonsense approach of the text. The content invites parents and children to discuss this topic openly, even at this early age. The book has already received national recognition and it is hoped that the authors will be able to maintain the quality of presentation in the ones that follow. The soft cover format is a drawback as the book is sure to see a lot of use by parents and teachers. Highly recommended.
