Andy MacDonald, author of Bread and Molasses (Musson, 1976) and Don't Slip on the Soap (Masson, 1978) obviously enjoys life to the fullest. The louder he disclaims this in his anecdotes, the more one sees the humour he has found in living. He apparently has had ample experiences that later proved to be comical. As in most real life situations the humour becomes obvious after the fact and not during the dramatic episode. Each chapter deals with one or more events from various times in the life of the author and tells what effect these episodes had on his family. Although most of these stories are amusing, something of the telling is lost in the writing. The twinkle of the eye, the tone of voice, and the gestures the author would have used in their narration are missing when one reads the printed word. These enjoyable yarns would probably evoke side-splitting laughter if told in the proper setting.
