Cancer patients and their families will appreciate the information and advice in this book. Too often the feelings of helplessness and the fear of the unknown deal a devastating blow when the diagnosis of cancer is made. Here, in layperson's terms, is a description of the disease and factual information about its diagnosis and treatment. Since cancer may occur in many body organs, the author discusses the numerous means of detection and the various symptions according to body site. The treatment, whether it be surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy is also explained. Terms used by health professionals are defined in a glossary that follows the text. The author is sensitive to the impact of cancer on the patient's outlook and lifestyle. In an honest and straightforward manner, she looks at problems such as nutrition, sexuality, family concerns, child cancer, and, if the disease in incurable, palliative care. A whole chapter is devoted to the quack treatments that may appeal to a family desperate for hope. Self-help groups are suggested, together with a directory of where to contact these organizations. This book is highly recommended for public and high school libraries. I wish it had been available when cancer was diagnosed in my family a decade ago.
