McLennan McCue Volume 13 Number 6 1985 November Neekna and Chemai, subtitled "An Okanagan Legend," is really a collection of Okanagan legends. All of the legends in this short collection deal with the respect that the Okanagan people showed toward the creatures, plants, and elements of nature upon which their lives depended. The legends are woven into a narrative about the lives of two young Okanagan girls before white contact. The stories are printed in easy-to-read type and are illustrated by the black-and-white sketches of Ken Edwards. The interesting theme and worthwhile purpose are however often hampered by stiff and awkward language that interrupts the story's flow. With that reservation, the book could be used as a tool for teaching the customs and legends of some of Canada's native people before contact. Sharon A.
