Robert Pennefather has obviously done considerable research into the existing documents of the Orange Order. Great lists of footnotes accompanying the first half of the book, and the documents that are presented in the second half indicate that a major study of the topic was undertaken . It is unfortunate for the reader of this book that the articles referred to in the footnotes do not accompany the author's comments. It is probable that their length would make the book un-wieldly, but one is constantly wondering what the author is referring to in his footnotes, and much of the impact of the material included is lost. The documents that are included tantalize the reader, but again they lack completeness and leave the reader frustrated.

It seems probable that, were one to have ready access to all the materials noted by the author, one could form an opinion as to the importance of the Orange Order. In its present form this book only piques one's curiosity. Maybe this is what good books should do. For the hooked reader information is given as to the many libraries where the complete documents may be viewed. This would certainly be a worthwhile reference for adult libraries.
