The strength of this text is evident in that it is based almost totally on the author's personal experience. His enthusiasm for hiking and his thorough research result in a very complete manual. Bruce Leaden is a full-time writer and avid biker. He obtained his BA from the University of Manitoba, where he worked at archaeological research. He has bicycled and toured all the provinces and produced numerous articles published in Bicycling, Outdoor Canada, and Photo Life magazine. Bicycle Camping in Canada was written to provide the enthusiast with a very detailed and practical guide. This book seems to cover almost everything you need to know about bicycle repair and maintenance. The most interesting sections include trip planning, fitness, camping equipment, and general road survival techniques. Another section deals with making your own bike camping equipment, which includes creating a custom-built camera case. Instructions for maintenance and repair are fully illustrated with photographs and diagrams. The fifteen diagrams are good, but the thirty-seven photpgraphic reproductions are generally weak in contrast and quality. The final section recommends places to go and things to see in Canada, followed by some useful charts and addresses, equipment lists, and additional reading. The book is highly recommended for anyone participating in bike tripping and should be included in all library collections.
