Chambers Volume 14 Number 1 1986 January Export Canada is an attractive and well-designed introduction to the importance of foreign trade. It was produced with young students in mind, and should capture their attention. It has catchy cartoons that emphasize the points made in the text. It also has excellent graphs and tables of figures that are easy to understand . There is a valuable glossary at the end containing clear definitions of the major terms students should know. Export Canada covers everything necessary for a clear understanding of the benefits of foreign trade. A major strength of the book is the chapter on Canada's trade partners and the various options for partners that are available. The options considered are Europe, the Pacific Rim, and the United States. This is particularly valuable in view of the recent controversy over the federal government's decision to seek a free trade agreement with the United States. A weakness is the attempt to present both sides of an argument. The arguments in favour of, and opposed to tariffs are presented. This is fair, but may be confusing to students. Canada, for example, has tariffs on textiles that are imported from many third world countries. The tariffs make these imports more costly, so that we will buy Canadian. But even with this protection, our textile industry is slowly dying. Wabasso, a major Canadian textile firm, recently went out of business.
