Simpson Volume 14 Number 1 1986 January The third in a series of large-format, paperback collections of Canadian art, Horizons is as likely to be welcomed as its predecessors, Twenty/Twenty* and Images (tester & Orpen Dennys, 1980). With a shrewd eye for regional interest and the divergence of taste, the authors have selected works that depict Canada's landscape in a variety of moods, executed in styles which range from the most arresting realism to the most haunting surrealism. Familiar names such as Casson, Danby, Colville, Phillips, and Onley appear among the twenty artists included, along with several little-known ones. Almost uniformly, the images which represent them are refreshingly inviting. There is no text, other than a proforma one-page introduction and brief biographies of the artists at the end of the book. For some reason unfathomable, descriptive information about each print has been placed on the facing page, which means that it is on the back of a different work. A few minutes with a photocopier can remedy matters, but it is a nuisance. This cavil aside, Horizons is a remarkable bargain for anyone looking for reproductions of Canadian art. J.E.
