Is anything more tragic than the death of a young child? In this book Sharon Clark relates the unhappy events that preceded the death of her twenty-three-month-old son, Jeffery, from a rare type of brain tumour. There is real honesty in the way this mother writes about the horror of her baby's death. She shares the unspoken fears as Jeffery developed the early symptoms of his illness and the ambivalence of a parent who must see painful medical procedures carried out on a child too young to understand them. We come to appreciate the constant debilitating worry the parents undergo in deciding whether to allow surgery, radiation, chemotherapy. Throughout the nine-month ordeal there, are descriptions of the sweet nature of the helpless child, the unfailing support of loving relatives, the frequent kindnesses displayed by medical personnel. This is a painful book to read. It is recommended for purchase by high schools that deal with the topic of death and dying.
