Volume 14 Number 1
Skills for Life is a new series of which only these three titles have been published. The covers state that it "has been created for high school and continuing education students. These books address topics related to a number of different subject areas that have immediate and continuing relevance for personal life management in our complex, rapidly changing world." The subjects of the three are quite evident from the titles. With their limited size, only an introduction or overview to the whole topic can be presented. With the large number of questions and activities included, it would seem that the purpose is primarily that of a student textbook. In all three books the authors have succeeded very well in presenting a large number of topics, definitions, and concepts in a logical organization, with a mature, yet simplified approach, easily read and understandable by high school students. The information and references are up-to-date. The only identifiable unity as a series in the three titles is the physical shape, as each has different pagination, and a different binding colour. The acknowledgements for all are on the verso of the title page, but that for Parenting separates illustrative from print acknowledgements. All include a table of contents, but that for Nutrition is the most useful, including as it does chapter sub-topics. None include an index. Life Career Planning includes a glossary, an item that would have been useful in the others. Each title refers to a number of other, much needed titles for additional information, but complete bibliographic details are sometimes lacking in all three. All books have an attractive format, with good print and variety in placement, type, and spacing of illustrative material and student exercises. Good selection and use of the photographs and cartoons is evident. A major strength and value is in the many and varied student questions, exercises, and projects that are suggested. Where the curriculum warrants, these books would be good choices, providing there are sufficient supporting resources available.
