Tribinevicius Volume 14 Number 1 1986 January D.R. McDonald is the third generation of his family to be intimately connected to the livestock industry. He has served in a variety of capacities from commission firm salesman, to market dealer, to auctioneer. For twenty-two years he supplied daily market reports each noon hour to radio and television stations throughout Ontario. In 1977 he became the first full-time secretary manager of the Toronto Live Stock Exchange, a position he still holds. The Toronto Stockyard and Live Stock Exchange is on the verge of being dramatically altered by automation and before too long the sale of livestock will be done by video and computer. The Stockyard Story marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of this vital marketplace and is a fond and nostalgic look at the 135 families whose several generations have built and maintained the business. The book is divided into two sections. The first is a history of the stockyards, illustrated with drawings and black-and-white photos from public archives and private albums. The second section, called "The Family Connection," is arranged alphabetically by surname and describes the familial involvement and ties to the stockyards. The book is designed for the lay reader and the information is easily accessed through the table of contents. An index is not provided, nor is it needed. Further investigations can easily be made using the photo credits or through the Stockyard and Livestock Exchange itself. The Stockyard Story is dedicated to the Toronto Livestock Exchange on the occasion of its seventy-fifth anniversary, and as such it pays homage to those who have developed livestock marketing in the Toronto area. The book will have limited appeal to the reading public as most agricultural books do. It is more anecdotal and personal than a scholarly researched treatise.
