Playwrights Union of Canada

Volume 14 Number 4
1986

Do you need a little drama in your life? Playwrights Union of Canada (PUC) is the place to find it, lots of it. PUC is the national voice of professional Canadian playwrights, and PUC would love to talk to you. If you are wondering

WHAT PLAY WON THE 1983 GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S AWARD? WHAT CHILDREN'S PLAYS FEATURE A LOVABLE CHARACTER CALLED "BINNIE"? WHAT IS GEORGE F. WALKER'S MIDDLE NAME?
The answers to these and other wild and wacky questions can be found at PUC. Occasionally the PUC staff is stumped, but not often. PUC acts as a resource centre for information about Canadian plays and playwrights. Just ask. image

WHERE CAN I FIND A PLAY TO PRODUCE? HOW CAN I FIND A CANADIAN PLAY TO ADD TO MY CURRICULUM? Or even, WHERE CAN I FIND SOME GOOD BOOKS?
PUC can help. Playwrights Union of Canada publishes and distributes more than five hundred plays. These are listed in our annual Catalogue of Canadian Plays (free upon request), and are available from PUC with a discount for orders of more than five plays. Plays are synopsized in the catalogue, and further information about them is available from PUC. Recent paperbacks include: The Mystery of the Oak Island Treasure, Jim Betts's Chalmers Award-winning play for children; Michael Cook's melodrama for young audiences, Tire Fisherman's Revenge; Odd Jobs by Frank Moher; The Tomorrow Box by Anne Chislett, and Salt-WaterMoon by David French, Coming soon are two anthologies of plays for young audiences, one focussing on plays dealing with issues affecting children, the other a collection of plays by renowned children's playwright, Dennis Foon.

WHERE CAN I READ LOTS OF GOOD PLAYS?
Probably at a location near you. PUC operates over twenty Reading Rooms across Canada and throughout the world For information about the Reading Room in your area, contact PUC.

HOW CAN I MEET A CANADIAN PLAYWRIGHT?
Call PUC about "Playwrights On Tour," Every year, PUC sends playwrights into more than two hundred primary and secondary schools, and into one hundred libraries, universities, theatres, and community organizations. Playwrights do workshops, speak about playwriting, or read from their work, all for the modest host fee of $55.00. "Playwrights On Tour" is sponsored by the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN CANADIAN THEATRE RIGHT NOW?
CanPlay, PUC's bi-monthly newsletter, can tell you. CanPlay is chock-full of articles about the arts, theatre listings and news, historical facts about Canadian drama, listings of writing competitions, photos, and, of course, news about Canadian plays. Subscriptions to CanPlay are available for $15.00 per year.

ARE CANADIAN PLAYWRIGHTS ANY FUN?
You bet. And to prove it, PUC organizes special events across the country. Readings, classes, playwrights' cabarets, and other events are on-going.
