Betty Kilgour's The Best of Crocus Coulee is a collection of vignettes reminiscing on the good and bad times on the prairie farm. Although the cover tells us Betty is the "acclaimed Erma Brombeck of the Farm Set," I was disappointed in this book. It is humorous; I did laugh aloud in certain sections and even shared some with a friend. But overall, the anecdotes are limited in their appeal as they definitely focus on female perceptions of farm life. Unlike Brombeck's, they do not suggest any general understanding of life. Somehow, they lack depth and often seem trite. It is unlikely that high school students would enjoy the humour, not having experienced the "old wash days," "income tax blues," or "how men change"; furthermore, some chapters are not relevant to their present circumstances, such as, "don't marry in the fall" and "home-makers don't work." On the other hand, a middle-aged farm community audience might find much to chuckle over.
